Beyond memory care: Building dementia-inclusive communities through integrated wellness

Dementia inclusion cannot live only in memory care. People living with cognitive change are part of the full community: independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing, dining rooms, hallways, wellness programs, family life, spiritual life, and everyday routines.

This session should help the audience see dementia inclusion as a community-wide movement, not a department, neighborhood, or checklist. The goal is not to dismiss safety. The goal is to ask whether safety is helping people live fully, or whether life has quietly been reduced to safety.

Learning objectives:

  1. What dementia inclusion means in whole-person wellness.

  2. How interdisciplinary teams can notice isolation, disengagement, and changing needs earlier.

  3. What operational practices make communities more inclusive and supportive.
